I went to see it with my dad this evening, and wanted to write down what struck me about it, see what other people thought. I’ll put the spoilery stuff under a cut, it’s the majority of what I wanted to write about so it’ll be long anyway.
Non-spoilery stuff? Well, overall, I’d say it’s enjoyable. I really liked the first half, it was exciting and interesting. The second half was exciting too, but… I dunno, it also felt a bit disappointing to me? Or maybe just sort of “….oh.” And I guess that’s for several reasons I’ll get into. Maybe I’m being a bit too harsh on it? I dunno. But anyway I’d say it’s worth seeing. All the acting was fantastic. Daniel Craig never disappoints and he certainly didn’t here. I think he’s starting to get type-cast as the stoic hero character, but you can’t say he doesn’t do it well. Harrison Ford was good. I can’t say I’m really that fond of his character, but he played him well. Olivia Wilde was lovely as always. I liked Sam Rockwell too but I think Iron Man 2 spoiled me somewhat for him because I always expect him to be that guy, and it’s weird to see him as someone different.
Also I do have to comment on Noah Ringer (Aang in Shyamalan’s The Last
ShitfestAirbender). I didn’t realize he was going to be in this movie. I found his portrayal of Aang absolutely wooden and lackluster in Airbender, though to be fair he didn’t have much to work with. But in this movie, I really have to say I was impressed. He did a much, much better job, I found him very believable, and I actually really grew fond of his character. So kudos to him, it looks like he’s growing a lot as an actor and that’s cool. It was nice to see Adam Beach, too!
Also I now desperately wish I could play Red Dead Redemption for the rest of the night, lol.
All right, guess I’ll go ahead and cut the rest. SPOILERS AHOY.
Ahaha, yeah, it fizzled a bit for me too after a while. I think because it was pretending for a while that it was going somewhere deep, and then remembered it was called COWBOYS & ALIENS and then gave up. I think they overdid the “OOoooOOO Whooo iiiis sheeee?” bit for stalker chick, so that she was just annoying rather than intriguing for me.
Have you seen Moon? Because uh, Sam Rockwell is FANTASTIC in that. It will break your typecast of him, I promise, haha. Much more serious than his usual roles.
Hahaha that’s a good way to put it. Or maybe that it overplayed where it was going?
I liked Ella, but I can see how people might get tired of her, and I could see where it would be like okay, we get it, she’s mysterious haha. But it didn’t bother me too much personally.
No I haven’t! I’ll definitely have to remember to watch it. He’s a great actor for sure, I’ve seen him in other roles, but Iron Man 2 is what sticks out in my memory for some reason. He also usually plays much more dynamic characters? So seeing him in such a relatively “normal” role threw me off a little! Haha. But he did a fine job, no question.
