As a middle class white male I get nothing in terms of scholarships, but had I been born a different race or gender, I would have the opportunity to have a bunch.

It might be different in the US, but there are like 2 scholarships you can get in the UK and you still need to be exceptional to get the disadvantaged one.

And I’m pretty sure it’s racism and ability that the disadvantaged one is trying to balance, not female-ness.

So I had no chance of any scholarship, and my friend who is black as well as female had no chance, either. People who whinge about scholarships for woman/POC etc are MAKING THIS SHIT UP.

No, this is bullshit for the U.S. as well. There are no scholarships you can get just “for being a woman.” I don’t want to  know what the fuck this meme is, but it needs to stop.

Just to clarify, there are indeed scholarships that can only be obtained by women, generally for those in traditionally “male” fields like the hard sciences. However, I can’t speak to the general nature of scholarship disbursement, which I would guess holds its own veins of privilege and disadvantage, not to mention that many people are so disenfranchised to the point that even getting to the point of trying to get a scholarship is not an option. Definitely not taking a side on behalf of “men” here, but there are scholarships designed solely for women (as well as other groups and minorities) BECAUSE of the historical and structural disadvantages and they shouldn’t be viewed as a handout because of what a person ticks in their application’s box for gender and/or sex.

Thank you for that, I should have been clearer. I meant that there are no scholarships that you can get simply for existing as a woman, which is what the image macro seems to imply. There definitely are, and should be, scholarships designed solely for women to compete to obtain, but they are not earned simply by being a woman, implying that being female affords an academic privilege that being male does not. That was what I meant. Thank you for adding that, very important.
